Looking for a new job can feel challenging if it's been years since your last job search – especially if you've been working for the same employer for a long time. Where do you start if you haven’t had to think about your skills or what you want to do next in a while?
Think about what kind of work and role you actually want. What kind of organization and work environment suits you – and what do you no longer want?
What can you do, what are you good at, and what kind of value do you bring to an employer? For someone who’s been in the same job for a long time, it can be hard to recognize your own strengths.
Read interesting job ads even if you’re not planning to apply. What skills do they look for and how are they described? This way, you’ll also find new ways to articulate your own skills.
Gather all your key skills, experience, and achievements in one document. Use it as a templaye when tailoring your CV for different jobs.
Demonstrate the scope of your responsibilities with numbers and examples: How large was your team, budget, or client base? What did you accomplish?
Tailor your CV and application for each position you're interested in.
Keep track of your applications, for example in Excel, and focus on a few well-chosen applications rather than many generic ones.
